Are you thinking about planning a career change, now or in the future? You may have discovered you’re just not passionate about your current job anymore. Or you’ve had your hand forced by being made redundant. A career change is something which is often underprepared for, making an already challenging situation even more stressful. But it doesn’t have to be that way.  As career transition specialists, we help clients everyday plan for and change careers. Here are our top tips for maximum success when changing your career.

6 Ways to Make Planning a Career Change Easier

1. Build Your Career Vision
Our careers often develop by drifting from one good thing to another without ever having an idea of where we are going.  When you’re unhappy with your career, it’s easy to listen to that pesky voice in your head telling you “I don’t know how to do anything else” or “I can’t afford to make a change because people are relying on me”.  Be brave and avoid setting limits on yourself.  Don’t get caught up in the reasons why you can’t change your career.  Be honest with yourself and think about what you really want.

2. Identify Your Values & Motivators
What is it that you really love and are good at doing? Something which gets you up in the morning raring to go and is immensely satisfying is the type of job you are wanting! Are you an outdoors person, preferring to be hands on? Or would an indoor work environment suit you better? What values are important to you? In previous jobs, what aspects did you like and dislike? Knowing what makes you tick helps planning a career change much easier.

3. Evaluate Your Current Skills
What skills do you have which are easily transferable into another career? Where are your skill gaps and what training is needed to upskill yourself in those areas? This can help guide your career choices if you are struggling to pick which industry you’d like to move into.

4. Do Your Research
Once you’ve decided the type of industry or career you want to aim for, start researching it. This could involve talking with others in the industry and asking plenty of questions. You’ll find those that love it and those which don’t. It’s up to you to decide if it is something you wish to pursue.

5. Write A Plan
Create a plan of what you would like your career to look like in the future. Add in the steps you will need to take to get there. This could involve finding out what qualifications you’ll need and meeting with an education provider to see what’s involved in achieving those. Think of your plan as a roadmap which clearly shows you the paths you will travel on to reach your ultimate destination.

6. Keep Moving Forward
Great things are not achieved overnight and when you’re planning a career change, it’s important to remember this. You’re on a journey and you need to keep working through your plan at a steady pace to get where you’re going. Find someone you trust to help you stay accountable by regularly checking in on your progress.

Great suggestions, gone are the days of one career in a lifetime but putting some thought into your next move will help make it a successful one
