Complaining, blaming others and making excuses is easy. We all do it.  Mainly because we can and because….well, it lets us off the hook.

This is particularly true when it comes to making a career change.  Never mind that we are desperately unhappy turning up to the same job we’ve done for the last 10 years.  Never mind that our passion for the job, (if we ever truly had it) has slowly eroded.  Never mind that every day we’re doing our job, we wish we were doing someone else’s.  It's not our fault!

Yes making excuses is easy.  Certainly much easier than putting in the effort needed to make a career change.  You don’t need to look too far to find plenty of great excuses to justify why you’ve failed to make a change.

It’s too hard
I’ve left it too late
I’m too old
I’m afraid I’ll look silly
I have a mortgage to pay
I want an overseas holiday
It’s not the right time
I can’t afford it
I don’t have time

There will always be a reason not to do it.  There will always be an excuse!

But here is the thing, career change is not meant to be easy.   If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Imagine a world where one week, you were preparing someone’s end of year taxes and the next you were removing their appendix.  It shouldn’t be that easy.  Where would the challenge be in that?   No, it’s supposed to take us out of our comfort zone.  It’s supposed to be nerve wracking and a certain amount of fear should always come along for the ride; but I truly believe that anyone can do it if they really want to.

Yes, making a change might require you to put in a great deal of effort and commitment.  Yes, you will quite likely need to make some sacrifices to achieve it.  Yes, it might take you time. Yes, there will be some risk. And yes, it might cost you money but surely if it is worth doing, those things shouldn’t matter so much.

So stop complaining and stop making excuses. It’s annoying!

At the end of the day it’s your choice.  If you want to make a change, find the courage to do it.  If you don’t want to, that’s perfectly okay too.  You don’t have to.  But either way stop complaining, stop making excuses and be happy with your choice.
